Rachel D. Fox empowers women through local nonprofit, shares advice for entrepreneurs, self-starters
Wife, mother, business owner, and community leader, Rachel D. Fox answers to many titles.
A mother of 11, Fox says her priority is family first, then work.
“There’s not one thing that I do that is not connected to who I am,” she says. “I can balance that out when I know that I’m walking my path and doing the things that I’m called to do.”
The importance of empowerment
In 2018, Fox founded You Go Girl, a nonprofit that empowers, encourages, and inspires girls and women through youth development programs and scholarships. She says many girls turn to the program to overcome uncertainty and boost their self-esteem.
“Once we unpack that for them, they start to soar,” Fox says. “Those are the seeds that we’re planting today.”
Fox also encourages men to empower women by becoming their allies, whether that’s actively supporting them or ensuring they have opportunities to advance.
“Make sure that you are becoming a voice for us,” she says. “We are able to do so much more when we have advocates and allies.”
Representation matters
A 2019 Mrs. Nebraska America finalist, Fox says she first ran as a way to challenge herself. She also wanted to be a trailblazer as the only black competitor, since no African American woman has ever been crowned Mrs. Nebraska.
“I was like, ‘Why am I the only black woman competing? I shouldn’t be,’” Fox says. “This year when I ran, I was determined to make a point because representation matters.”
Making a vision a reality
More than ever, Fox says people need others to show them their dreams can be possible.
While many people have a vision board outlining their goals, she says the only way to succeed is to take concrete steps toward a desired result.
“You have got to make incremental actions towards the things that you want to see,” Fox says. “Attack each day with a positive mindset and expect a positive outcome.”
